【bio】Life Science v.s. Computer Science = Fantasy v.s. Persistence

The movie "The Social Network" explained why I love writting codes instead of doing biological experiments. By the way, as a biology student, I'm supposed to have crazy feelings for designning and conducting biological experiments in lab, and the lab is supposed to be our second home. However, it does NOT apply to me. 

I love the feelling of controlling everything in my order. I need safy or security when doing everything. This is the intrinsic reason that I'm in love with computer programming at the first time I got contacted with computer science. In addition, I believe that I have certain talent. 

Biology world is full of possiblity, a little bit like the wonderland which Alice came across. Life, is of series only-God-know accidents assemblies. Currently, our human being do have deep understanding about the machanism of life works, as lots of molecular pathways have been verified through thousands of millions of experiments, but is it deep enough? Of course, far away. In the bad and duck side, no one can keep everything under cotrol when conducting expriments. This makes sense when you found different students came out with different or even distinct PCR or Wertern Blot results even using the same tubes, same pills, same conditions. The expriments skill plays an apparently important role. In the good and positive view, partly because of the above disappointing aspects, life science with uncertain and unpridictable possiblities can be always thrilling people when certain profound and brand-new founding comes out. 

Computer science world is of rules, perfectly examplified by the famous movie "the Matrix". Extremly distinguished from biology, computer science or specific computer programming always leads to same result with the same codes. Codes enable programmer keep everything under control, or at least, more controllable than life science. All what a certain programmer need to keep in mind is to keep all the varients in mind. 

From the above, it is reasonable to conclude that life science puts emphasis on the discoverying progress, while the ablity to picture the whole image in mind plays the key role in computer science. Persistence makes a good biologist, while fantacy makes a good programmer, for example Morgan, the father of genetics in biology world and Mark Zuckburge, the father of the social website FACEBOOK. 

However, take a look at the researchers or programmers in our current biology and computer world. Most biologists are of fantastic ideas and cannot focuses on the expriments for a long term while most programmers are the good-boys always obeying the rule and are willing to contribute themselves writting the bugs for  Microsoft Company for their entire life.  The most important quality they're supposed to have is exactly far away from  what they're having. In other word, it is suggested that biology students fit for programming while the computer students fit for biological researches. 

If the suggestion were not convincing, I'll say, so am I. Without fantastic and flexible idea, how could she or he be qualified to discover the wonderland? Without persistence how could she or he be willing to modify certain computer system or software. All I want to express, it is worrying that current biologists don't like to calm down, focus on the project to prove ideas true or false, while they're more likely to raise brand-new ideas. So are the computer scientists, who are more code-writting machines than flesh mind human. 

This is why I love programming even I'm indeed a future biologist. Not only have programming become a new and powerful member in my toolbox on the bio-discovery road,  but also keep me pluged with new blood called persistence.
